My Word For 2018

So, typically, we pick out a word or phrase at the beginning of each year to guide our thoughts and actions, helping us achieve certain goals or live a certain way. It’s our theme for the year. It’s an anchor; a north star. But, come January 1, 2018, I didn’t have one. I was just three months new to Colorado so I had a lot of figuring out to do with life before I tried to manifest a new year in a place I was still getting to know.

In 2017, I picked SALVAGE. I was in a bad way and desperately wanted to save a relationship I ruined. That didn’t happen. Instead, I ended up moving to distance myself from the heartbreak and right my path a bit. I did salvage most of my happiness, and the end of 2017 was a turning point for me. But at the beginning of this year, I let the universe do its thing.

So now I’m reflecting and putting a word to the year I just had. It deserves one because it’s been one of the best of my whole life. I didn’t see that coming, but apparently the universe knew exactly what I needed.

My word for this past year is RADICAL. It came to to me in the shower, where only my best ideas do.

Radical means a lot of things:

  • As an adjective, it relates to the far-reaching nature of a thing. It’s a departure from tradition. It’s innovation. It’s a sign of progress. Radical is a root and a foundation.
  • As a noun, a radical is a person. Someone who advocates for reform. They want change for a greater good. Radicals want revolution. And, coincidentally, “rad” is what I’d file 99% of my bikes rides under this past year. See also: “Rad, dude!”

My 2018 needed a revolution; a complete upheaval and de-throning of negative thoughts and feelings. This radical change was mostly thanks to my job and the community at Rapha. I meet amazing people every day who become friends, riding partners, confidants, mentors, and a swift kick in my ass when I’m doubting myself or my abilities.

This year is going to be difficult to top, I’m sure of that, but I’m excited to see where 2019 goes. I have lots of hopes, dreams, and even fears in the new year, but no doubts.

I really believe everything that should happen will happen when it should happen, and THAT is the most radical change of 2018.

Happy New Year.
