Quarantine Day 5: By The Numbers

My last quarantine update for the week, I promise.

When I went to bed last night, there were over 244,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus worldwide.

When I logged in to work this morning I checked again: 246,444. (I’m using this interactive map here.) In under twelve hours, the world added over 2,000 cases, and that doesn’t include the people who are not tested, who are waiting on testing results, who have it and don’t know, who have it and aren’t showing symptoms. The United States itself had over 14,000 cases, and Colorado had 277.

At 1:30 p.m., worldwide cases rose to 266,082. The United States was up to over 16,000, and Colorado held at 277.

At 7:30 p.m., worldwide cases are at 272,367. The United States is just shy of 20,000, and the number of active and confirmed cases in Colorado jumped to 363. The podcasts I listen to and even some news articles I read can’t seem to keep up with the numbers. I’m anxious, I’m scared, I’m frustrated, all while trying to stay hopeful. That story about those fucking kids on spring break in Florida continuing to drink at bars and gather in huge groups despite warnings and serious threats of catching the virus is disgusting to me. It’s selfish. It’s disrespectful. It’s irresponsible. We’re facing something so widespread that it is literally every individual person’s responsibility on this planet to take precautions, to isolate. *Gets down off soapbox.* I’m tired of thinking about this but it’s the only thing making news these days.

On one of our team calls today, my boss brought up the fact that sports are maybe getting the least attention they’ve ever gotten right now. Maybe that’s a good thing?

Anyway, since I just threw a ton of big scary numbers at you, here are a few more.

40: Due to all the snow we got yesterday (two feet!!), the sidewalks and roads were way too snowy and icy to run outside, so I opted for a 40-minute indoor HIIT workout. It was killer and exactly what I needed to start the day.

3: I had three cups of coffee spread out over the first few hours of the day, but I didn’t end up drinking all three cups. I don’t have a microwave, so when my coffee goes cold I can’t just heat it back up and finish it. I usually end up pouring out a couple half cups and refilling with a fresh hot cup. One day I’ll have to cave and get a microwave again. It’s just so convenient.

5: I had five video meetings today, which was really great. I used to hate video meetings, but since I’m home by myself all day working remote, it is really nice to see and talk to my co-workers. They are all amazing and miss them.

2: I went on two walks today for some fresh air while talking to my dad and sister on the phone. I saw some kids sledding and it totally made my day.

1: At 3 p.m. our team had a virtual happy hour together! I’m not drinking right now so I had a ginger ale, but it was nice to participate and catch up with everyone before the weekend.

1: I made one DELICIOUS roasted side dish that ended up being my dinner because I ate the whole thing instead of splitting it into two like I planned. Whoops. I chopped up carrots into sticks then coated them in the most amazing marinade of olive oil, garlic, yellow mustard, lemon juice, oregano, salt, and pepper then baked them in the oven for about an hour at 400*.

The recipe I used was meant for potatoes not carrots, but I don’t have potatoes. It still turned out delicious and I’m going to make it again soon and I think even use the marinade for chicken.

I hope you all had a great week. I hope you’re staying safe and getting the fresh air you need and deserve and also taking proper precautions but not going completely crazy. ❤

  1. I’m currently in China, where the quarantine situation has been a part of our lives for about two moths. You will get through this. Hang in there! I’m drinking a lot of coffee too!

  2. This has been the longest week of my life! I am praying that come mid-April this will be better and the quarantine’s will begin to be lifted (slowly) of course but it would be nice to sit in a coffee shop again and read a book. I still make sure to run by the local starbucks on Saturday’s and Sunday’s to grab my treat but I miss running their everyday like I did in the past on the way home from the gym before work! What is one thing you’re missing because of the quarantine? Also, how much of each ingredient did you use for the carrot dish?

    1. I know how you are feeling for sure. Hoping things slow down soon! I didn’t really measure anything; I used just enough to get a good coat on everything, so it will vary depending on how much you have in your pan!
